چکیده

Sensor networks operating in the 2.4 GHz band often face cross-technology interference from co-located WiFi and Bluetooth devices. To enable effective interference mitigation, a sensor network needs to know the type of interference it is exposed to. However, existing approaches to interference detection are not able to handle multiple concurrent sources of interference. In this paper, we address the problem of identifying multiple channel activities impairing a sensor network’s communication, such as simultaneous WiFi traffic and Bluetooth data transfers. We present SpeckSense, an interference detector that distinguishes between different types of interference using a unsupervised learning technique. Additionally, SpeckSense features a classifier that distinguishes between moderate and heavy channel traffic, and also identifies WiFi beacons. In doing so, it facilitates interference avoidance through channel blacklisting. We evaluate SpeckSense on common mote hardware and show how it classifies concurrent interference under realworld settings. We also show how SpeckSense improves the performance of an existing multichannel data collection protocol by 30%.

Creating Band-Notched Characteristics for Compact UWB Monopole Antennas

In 2002, the FCC in the US authorized the unlicensed use of the ultrawideband (UWB) frequency spectrum for commercial applications in the range from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz with an emission limit of -41.3 dBm/MHz which is near to the thermal noise floor [1]. UWB communication systems operating in such a wide frequency band and low power emission level could easily be interfered by the existing nearby c...

Bluetooth: Analysis and Performance Evaluation

IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth, these two operating in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz frequency band are becoming more and more popular in the mobile computing world. The number of devices equipped with IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth is growing drastically. Result is the number of co-located devices, say within 10 meters, grown to a limit, so that it may causes interference issues in the 2.4 GHz radio frequency ...

Novel Time-Sharing Scheme for Virtual Elimination of Locata-WiFi Interference Effects

Solution accuracy of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) is often compromised by the satellite-user geometry, weak signal levels and system outages. Locata Corporation’s positioning technology potentially bridges such gaps in availability, providing cm-level accuracy in challenging positioning environments. A Locata network consists of timesynchronized terrestrial transceivers (called Lo...

Spectrum Sharing in an ISM Band: Outage Performance of a Hybrid DS/FH Spread Spectrum System with Beamforming

This paper investigates spectrum sharing issues in the unlicensed industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. It presents a radio frequency measurement setup and measurement results in 2.4 GHz. It then develops an analytical model to characterize the coexistence interference in the ISM bands, based on radio frequency measurement results in the 2.4 GHz. Outage performance using the interfer...
